The former Tappan Zee Bridge first opened for traffic in 1955. Due to a significant increase in commuters in recent years, the iconic bridge called for a new design, leading to its transformation into the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. This project entailed the construction of a completely new, massive bridge spanning 3.1 miles. Additions included 419-foot towers with outwardly inclined and geometrically aligned cables, eight general traffic lanes, dedicated public transit lanes, four break-down emergency lanes, and a new bike lane and pedestrian path featuring state-of-the-art traffic monitoring systems. The project was awarded to Tappan Zee Constructors in 2013 and was completed in 2017.
AEIS performed critical inspections on the bridge piers, foundation, and superstructure. Our inspection and testing team determined the quality and compliance of project materials and activities in reference to approved specifications, standards, and codes. This in turn, enhanced project-owner confidence in the long-term success of this transformative project.
